To me, birdwatching has always been a way for me to connect with nature and gain an appreciation for the world around us. While traditional birdwatching has always involved visiting different locations and spending time outdoors, there are now ways to see birds and enjoy many of the same activities typical birdwatching includes, which you can do comfort of your own home. Aside from using platforms like YouTube for live streams or feeder cams, one of the more interactive tools has been a platform called Twitch.
Twitch is a popular platform primarily used for live streaming video games. However, it has also become a popular destination for wildlife and bird enthusiasts to stream live footage of birds from all over the world. Here are some tips on how you can use Twitch to watch birds without needing to travel:
Find birdwatching channels on Twitch
The first step is to find birdwatching channels on Twitch. There are many channels that stream live footage of birds from various locations around the world. Some popular birdwatching channels include:
- TheBirdsGuy – This guy travels all over the US and goes birding. He straps a camera to his body and uses that as his streaming content as he listens and looks for birds
- DrDW40 – Like TheBirds guy, he travels around and goes birding. He also spends time in other natural places not just for the birds but promotes other type of conservation efforts
- Ipaintbirbs – If you’re looking for something more relaxing but interesting in a different way, this artist paints birds in funny ways not just your typical Audubon painting.
You can use the search function on Twitch to find channels that stream live bird footage.
Follow your favorite channels
Once you have found some birdwatching channels, you can follow them to receive notifications when they go live. This allows you to tune in and watch the birds whenever they are streaming. You can also interact with other viewers in the chat and ask questions about the birds, which they will often answer for you on the spot.
Watch birdwatching highlights
In addition to live streams, many birdwatching channels on Twitch also upload highlights and clips of their streams. These highlights are short videos that showcase the best moments from their live streams. You can watch these highlights to get a taste of what birdwatching is like on Twitch. One of my favorite streams is TheBirdGuy’s trip to Kansas, which often thought of as flat and featureless but shows the opposite with a land rich with wildlife!
Use Twitch to learn about birds
Twitch can also be a great resource for learning about birds. Many birdwatching channels provide educational content about different species of birds, their behavior, and their habitats. You can also learn about different birdwatching techniques and how to identify different birds.
Participate in birdwatching events
Some birdwatching channels on Twitch also host events where viewers can participate in birdwatching activities from home. For example, they may host a bird identification contest or a virtual birdwatching tour. These events can be a fun way to connect with other bird enthusiasts and learn more about birds.
Support bird conservation efforts
Finally, you can use Twitch to support bird conservation efforts. Many birdwatching channels on Twitch are affiliated with conservation organizations that work to protect bird habitats and promote bird conservation. You can donate to these organizations or participate in fundraising events to support their efforts.
Birdwatching on Twitch is a great way to watch birds from all over the world without needing to travel. By following birdwatching channels, watching highlights, learning about birds, participating in events, and supporting conservation efforts, you can become a part of the birdwatching community on Twitch and connect with nature in a unique and exciting way.
